A-maze-ing Brain! is a giant brain-shaped maze co-created with children living with dementia and children with a range of abilities. The project was inspired by the maze-like brain architecture, the winding journey rare disease patients travel to receive a correct diagnosis, and the complex path researchers navigate in search of an effective treatment. Developed through the ArtPlay New Ideas Lab 2025 – 2026, an initiative of the City of Melbourne, the project’s first iteration embraced a deeply child-centred approach. Children were not passive participants, but co-creators who actively shaped the experience and re-imagined the brain through curiosity, play and imagination.
In the A-maze-ing Brain! project, we invited children to take an imaginary visit inside their brains. The result was an explosion of colours, ideas, and perspectives that many of us scientists, confined by textbooks, have forgotten. This process revealed to us that children have an innate and imaginative understanding of their brains. We believe this creative insight deserves to be further explored, amplified, and shared.
